Reaction wavefront theory of notochord segment patterning

The vertebrate axis is segmented into repetitive structures, the vertebrae. In fish, these structures are thought to form from paraxial mesoderm and adjacent notochord. Recent work revealed an autonomous patterning mechanism in zebrafish notochord, with inputs mesoderm. notochord pattern established a sequential manner, progressing anterior posterior. Building on this previous work, here, we propose reaction wavefront theory describing zebrafish. generated by activator–inhibitor reaction–diffusion mechanism. Cues introduced as profile of inhibitor sinks. Reactions turned that advances We show ensures formed sequentially, register cues, despite presence fluctuations. find velocity shape can modulate prevalence defective patterns. Normal supported wide range sink wavelengths, while minimum strength required for follow cues. predicts distinct defect types occur small or large wavelengths. Thus, provides possible scenario patterning, testable predictions prompt future experiments.
